Purgatory was Cristóbal Rojas Poleo’s final work, created the same year he died of tuberculosis. Commissioned by the parish priest of La Pastora in Caracas, Venezuela, Rojas’s Purgatory was the only painting he made that included the nude human form, and he made a number of studies to prepare for it. The final painting is poorly documented, only the low resolution scan above is currently available online.
