El Greco only painted two landscape paintings, both of the Spanish city of Toledo. In this impressionistic view of the city, El Greco rearranged the landmarks into a serpentine crawl through the surrounding hills. The low-slung clouds and elongated Mannerist style are a precursor to Cezanne’s landscapes and Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
